Sitting along the eastern shore of Ravenmarch Bay is the city of Tanners Harbor. A little over a decade ago the city was nothing more than a collection of farmers and fishermen who used the waterway to transport their goods to Kings Point. However all that changed when Silian Greenwood discovered a new way to boil and cure leather that produced a stronger more durable hide without sacrificing the flexibility of leather. Known as the Greenwood method Silian began to produce his hides in a multitude of different thicknesses and colors. It didn’t take long for other tanners and tradesmen to catch on that the product produced by Greenwood was far superior to other leather and they could fetch a much better price for goods made with Greenwood leather. Soon the demand for Greenwood’s leathers became so high that the few farms in the region could no longer support the growing business. Pig and cow farmers from different parts of the world began to buy land in the surrounding countryside and within a dozen years or less a fairly large city had sprung up around Greenwood Tanning.
In addition to the farms in the area others have found a less than reputable way to capitalize on the success of Tanners Harbor. Several other tanning and leather producers have opened business in town however none of these use the same boiling and curing techniques that Greenwood Tanning uses. But that doesn’t stop them from turning a handsome profit by simply ridding on the coat tails of the Tanners Harbor reputation. Many beyond the Ravenmarch know that there is a difference between Greenwood Tanning Leathers and other businesses in the city until they have already purchased the inferior quality leather, and then it is too late.
In recent years the problem has become even more bothersome since the death of the towns former Magistrate. The current Magistrate is the loathsome Eugene Swinehart who is among the multitude of businessmen in the town who produces the lower quality leather but capitalizes on the Tanners Harbor name.
